Ch 62: My Wolf Husband

Just as the old deaf man was about to turn around, Lin Shuishi held his breath, dashed forward, grabbed the back of the little bear cub’s neck, and stuffed it into the wooden cabinet, slamming the door shut with a loud “thud!”

Then, he quickly turned, grabbed the broken pot from the little white wolf’s head, snatched the piece of braised meat from its mouth, and with a swift motion, tossed the meat onto the cutting board behind the old man. The wolf’s blue eyes followed the meat in a focused arc through the air, and just as it was about to instinctively pounce on it, Lin Shuishi landed a punch that sent it tumbling back behind the stove.

At that moment, the old soldier turned around to see Lin Shuishi standing in front of the stove, grinning nervously. The old man was just about to mention the missing meat when he noticed the lone piece of braised meat sitting perfectly on the cutting board.

“Oh hey! Here it is. Ah, my memory’s going, I’m getting old,” he said, stepping forward to grab it.

“Hmm? Why is it all sticky? That’s odd. I just made it today, how could it have gone bad?” Lin Shuishi quickly walked over and took the slobbery piece of meat from the old man’s hands.

“It’s not bad, not bad at all! Thank you, old man! I’ll find something to eat myself; you go on with your work.”

The old soldier, feeling his age and exhaustion after these past few days, chatted a bit more with Lin Shuishi before turning back to his tent to rest.

But if he had turned around just a moment later, he would have caught sight of the cabinet door being kicked open with a “thump” by a large black paw, revealing a bewildered little black bear cub sitting inside. Even more shocking, he would have seen a half-grown white wolf standing on the stove, wagging its tail!

Later in the camp, Lin Shuishi, with a blank expression, dragged a cloth bag back to his tent. If any acquaintances asked what was inside, Lin Shuishi would reply in a chilling tone, “Dinner. I’ll kill them when I get back and bleed them out one by one.”

His acquaintances, startled by the response, would think to themselves, wow, the battlefield really does mature a person. Just look at this young man now—he’s got a bit of a killer instinct!

When Fuli quietly sneaked back into the camp in the middle of the night, he hadn’t even entered the tent when his nose twitched, catching a scent. Just as he was about to lift the tent flap, Lin Shuishi suddenly yanked it open from the inside, his face full of accusation, and pulled Fuli behind the screen at the back of the tent.

In the corner behind the screen, the two little troublemakers sat with their bellies full, facing the wall as if in punishment. Despite their situation, they were still playing around, though grudgingly. But as soon as they saw Fuli return, their expressions instantly changed. The little wolf immediately became bashful and obedient, sitting up straight with a well-behaved look, gazing up at Fuli with innocent eyes.

Lin Shuishi, seeing this, let out a frustrated “Hey!” and grabbed both of the little ones by the ears. “You little rascals, showing two faces! Where was all that energy when you were sneaking into the mess hall to steal food?”

As Lin Shuishi spoke, he suddenly realized how good it felt in his hands. The wolf’s ears stood up straight, large and fluffy, while the bear cub’s ears were round and kept twitching. With a huff, Lin Shuishi began to squeeze them vindictively.

Fuli’s chest rumbled with a low sound as his tightly furrowed brow relaxed. He scooped Lin Shuishi up, curling him into his arms, and gently trapped the hand that had been messing up the little ones’ fur in the crook of his arm.

But Lin Shuishi was a bit annoyed. “Hey, don’t hold me like that! Think about what we’re going to do with these two little troublemakers. Who’s ever heard of a good wolf sneaking into a military camp to steal meat? It’s dumb enough, but it even brought along something dumber!”

The bear cub, unaware that it was being talked about, had fallen asleep standing up after facing the wall for so long…

Lin Shuishi pulled his hand free and, speechless, pointed at the shiny black little bear that was nodding off, “Look at it! It hasn’t even been weaned yet, has it?”

“How did they even sneak in? And with the war going on, what if they get hurt?”

In the end, Lin Shuishi was mainly worried about these two creatures. He and Fuli were already in a precarious position under the barbarians’ watchful eyes, and now he was deeply concerned that he wouldn’t be able to protect them.

Fuli shook his head at Lin Shuishi’s words. “Nearby, there are wolves. They can guard them. No need to worry.”

Lin Shuishi was startled. “The wolves have come down from the mountain?”

“We’ve been away from the mountain for a long time. A team of five wolf guards came to find us.” Fuli replied, glancing down at the little white wolf with a shifty gaze.

“It followed us halfway here, so we had to bring it along.” Seeing that Lin Shuishi was still upset, Fuli added, “It will get punished when we return. The wolf king will be angry.”

Thinking about the wolf king, who showed no mercy, Lin Shuishi snorted, “Good! That thing deserves it; if it doesn’t get a beating, it’ll think it can do whatever it wants!” But after a while, he still ended up giving both the wolf and the bear some of the military’s special treats, ensuring they were full before sending them back.

Under the cover of night, Fuli grabbed one in each hand and left the camp, swiftly crossing several mountains until he reached a lush, dense forest in the highlands. With just a quick scan of his golden eyes, he casually tossed the two little creatures into the woods.

Several strong white wolves immediately leaped out of the forest, grabbing the now-quiet wolf and bear cub and quickly disappearing into the depths of the forest.

Except for the “babysitters,” the remaining dozen white wolves followed Fuli closely as they sprinted in a specific direction. Under the cover of the moonlight, they moved swiftly and silently.

The beast in human form led the brave pack of white wolves straight toward Xuancheng. For some reason, the barbarian army neither advanced nor retreated, instead maintaining their position nearby. They had set up a large formation at the city gate, shrouded in thick fog, and any soldiers who tried to break through the formation from inside the city had mysteriously vanished. From the outside, the entire city was hidden within the fog, and no one could see what was happening inside.

However, the strange formation appeared differently in the eyes of Fuli and the wolf pack. They could see through the thick fog, and in the reflection of their blue pupils were the uncollected corpses of fallen humans beneath the city walls, the shattered city gate, and the soldiers currently defending the city. They could also see the entire formation clearly, including its setup and key points, as if it were laid out right before them.

The wolves moved in coordinated patterns, naturally demonstrating the changes within the formation. Fuli watched intently, his gaze focused as he contemplated deeply.

It was midnight, and the barbarian army was beginning to change shifts. The wolf pack had already vanished into the mountains and forests, leaving Fuli to traverse the surrounding desolate villages alone under the cover of darkness. He had long since caught the scent of the “withered vine people,” a stench of death unique to them, but their elusive nature made them difficult to track.

After crossing charred woodlands and ruined villages, Fuli, now gradually transforming into his beastly form, followed the scent in the air until he stopped on a mountain peak. The moonlight shone on his silver fur, which rippled in the night breeze, giving his form a ghostly sheen. He looked down with cold, narrowed golden eyes at the barbarian army camped on the plain below.

Most of the barbarian soldiers were sleeping in the open, but in the well-guarded center of the camp, there was a cluster of luxurious interconnected tents. These tents were brightly lit, and with Fuli’s keen hearing, he could even catch the occasional sound of drums and music.

Stacked high behind the tents were bamboo baskets covered in black cloth. Occasionally, a gust of wind would lift a corner of the cloth, revealing glimpses of torn pieces of small clothing.

The barbarian army stretched for dozens of miles, and they didn’t even bother posting guards, confident that no one would dare attack their main camp. To them, the people of the Central Plains were nothing more than “weak sheep” putting up a futile resistance. This fertile land was already in their grasp, and they were simply waiting for the barbarian king’s order to storm Xuancheng and march straight to the capital!

The white wolf’s golden eyes narrowed into slits, making its gaze appear even more merciless and cold. It resembled a ruthless judge, scrutinizing its prisoners. Meanwhile, the barbarian soldiers, who had arrogantly waged war against nature by burning mountains and forests, were still basking in the euphoria of war and the thrill of slaughter, relishing the memories.

That day, the barbarian king, impatient and restless, had summoned the shaman to his royal tent. Having just drunk a bowl of thick, red liquid, the king was in a state of excitement. In a careless moment, he crushed a dancing girl who had been serving him beneath him.

Casually, he tossed her lifeless body outside the tent, where the guards, accustomed to such scenes, began cleaning up the mess. The other musicians, women playing delicate instruments, showed no reaction on their faces, but the trembling of their hands beneath their flowing sleeves betrayed their inner terror.

None of them dared to show any sign of fear, knowing that they could be the next to meet the same fate.

“The potion you provided is quite good, Shaman, but it’s not enough, not enough! I need more!” The barbarian king, growing increasingly irritable, violently shoved aside the dancing girl and angrily kicked over and shattered all the cups filled with the liquid beside him.

The shaman, however, seemed completely unfazed. He even leisurely observed the barbarian king’s face, which was becoming increasingly flushed and tinged with purple. With a wicked smile, he said, “My king, I have already unraveled the cycles of all things in the world. The secret to immortality is within reach.”

Feeling the surging power and vitality coursing through his body, the barbarian king, in a fit of frenzy, smashed the beautiful head of another dancing girl with a single blow, his blood-splattered face displaying a look of delirium.

“Thank you, Shaman. I’ll assign you two thousand elite barbarians; just do what you must!”

The shaman nodded, rose, and left the tent. Before he could exit, the barbarian king added, “Shaman, we’re running low on elixirs. Go fetch some more.”

Once outside, the shaman glanced at the dense starry sky and the nearly full moon, then briefly eyed the piles of bamboo baskets outside the royal tent. He smirked slightly; the king was consuming far too much.

But that was fine.

Lin Shuishi waited for Fuli all night, but there was no sign of him anywhere. By morning, he had drifted off to sleep. Just as he was dozing, he was startled awake by an excited shout. When he looked up, it was the disheveled Sun Luqian.

For the past few days, Sun Luqian had been waking early and working late, tirelessly laboring, and his hair and face were now covered in wood shavings. But at that moment, he was so excited that he didn’t care about anything else and barged right into Lin Shuishi’s tent.

Dr. Sun grabbed Lin Shuishi from his bed, his hands shaking the young man’s small frame in excitement. “Shuishi! You—you are truly a savior of the world!”

Lin Shuishi, still groggy from sleep, was suddenly yanked up and shaken so hard that his brain felt like it was turning to mush!

Seeing the usually composed Dr. Sun so out of character, spouting grand, flowery praises, Lin Shuishi could only feel like he was still dreaming.

Sun Luqian, typically gentle and refined in nature, had always been cautious due to his background. But now, in his excitement, he had gone overboard. When he finally regained his composure, he felt slightly embarrassed and looked at the confused and dazed young man, letting out an “Oh dear” as he slapped his forehead.

As Dr.Sun let go of him, Lin Shuishi’s bed hair swayed sleepily.

“Shuishi ! We’ve finished the crossbow. Come and see!”

Once Sun Luqian had calmed down a bit, he spoke with a heavy heart, full of emotion.

“The nation… there is hope.”
