Ch 48: My Wolf Husband

However, this thought only flashed briefly in Fuli’s mind. He couldn’t help but blame the wolf king for being too showy lately because his mate was pregnant with another litter, making Fuli constantly think about the same situation for himself.

Still, Fuli glanced at Lin Shuishi’s belly with a complex expression. By animal standards, with that frequency and quantity, there should be some signs by now.

Seeing Fuli staring blankly at the pups in his arms, Lin Shuishi waited for a while and then heard Fuli, with a hint of amusement in his voice, say, “Not mine. Whose?”

It took Lin Shuishi a moment to react before his face flushed red. He gritted his teeth and kicked Fuli.

“I found them!”

After saying that, Lin Shuishi opened his robe a bit wider, showing the pups to Fuli. “Take a good look! Are there any wolf packs like this around here? The mother wolf shoved the pups at me and then ran off. I didn’t dare stay long, considering the situation there.”

Fuli leaned in, but instead of looking at the pups, his gaze focused on Lin Shuishi’s chest, which still bore marks from the previous night’s rough treatment…

Lin Shuishi looked up, his eyes wide as he clicked his tongue in disapproval. Only then did Fuli snap back to reality, moving closer to sniff carefully. After thinking it over, he realized something was off. Every wolf had its own scent, and they could clearly distinguish any wolf in Dongshan.

“These aren’t from a Dongshan pack,” he concluded. Then, he reached into Lin Shuishi’s robe, pulled out one of the pups, and examined it closely.

Lin Shuishi could only feel the heat from that large hand brushing against the skin of his chest, making him shiver slightly, the swollen area becoming even more inflamed. This sensation was entirely different from the ticklish feeling of the pups nudging him. Feeling uncomfortable, he quickly closed his robe.

Fuli sniffed the pup carefully, then called over the wolf king to have a smell as well. The two exchanged low growls and barks, communicating with each other. Afterward, the wolf king led several wolves with keen senses and a talent for tracking down the mountain.

Fuli, meanwhile, grabbed the pups by the scruff of their necks, pulling open Lin Shuishi’s robe again in the process, and used the opportunity to feel the soft skin underneath as he placed the pups down.

Lin Shuishi gasped, unable to move while holding the pups close to his chest, so he kicked Fuli again, who only found it amusing and took it as playful banter.

In the dense, quiet forest, a gray shadow moved stealthily through the underbrush, its eyes fixed on a rabbit nibbling on tender grass after digging through the thin layer of snow. Just as the rabbit was momentarily distracted by its digging, the gray shadow leaped, lunging forward with all its might, and sank its teeth into the rabbit’s neck.

The wild rabbit was still struggling, but the weak, milkless mother wolf lacked the strength. Once a leader of her pack capable of hunting deer on her own, she now couldn’t even crush the throat of a small rabbit with a single bite.

Yet, hidden within the underbrush, the mother wolf devoured her first meal in three weeks, ravenously eating even the rabbit’s skin.

After feeding, the mother wolf immediately retraced her steps, intending to find that strange “female wolf” and reclaim her pups. But as soon as she stepped out of the dense forest, she became alert, realizing she was surrounded.

A pack of tall, strong white wolves had encircled her. Even the smallest among them was larger than the strongest male leader of the gray wolf pack.

Wolves cannot easily trespass on another pack’s territory; such lone wolves are deemed intruders, and the pack can easily kill them. But this mother wolf, driven by the instinctual respect and call of the bloodline, had, in her dire time, instinctively fled towards Dongshan. She had crossed countless peaks and hills, finally arriving here at the time of her delivery.

Now, utterly exhausted, she submissively lay on the ground, exposing her belly, and cautiously edged closer to the white wolf leader with her ears flat against her head.

These white wolves were different from ordinary packs. Their lifespan was long, their intelligence high, and they were born with a mission. Thus, their actions couldn’t be judged by the simple behaviors typical of wolves.

The wolf king, having identified the source of the wolf that had intruded into Dongshan and “wronged” his elder brother, approached to sniff and determine where this weak female wolf had come from. Then, the wolf king issued a complex series of sounds from his throat towards the submissive wolf.

However, despite the wolf king’s lengthy communication, the mother wolf didn’t respond, continuing to cautiously lie on the ground. The wolf king, who had recently been feeling rather triumphant, tilted his head in contemplation for a while. He eventually realized that perhaps this wolf wasn’t well-versed in their sophisticated language.

After all, not all wolf packs had a human-like lifespan to study complex and profound means of expression. It was only at this moment that the wolf king realized the true importance of “educating” others!

Finally, the mother wolf, being one of the best from her pack, managed to grasp the intentions of these seemingly sacred white wolves. She quietly followed behind them, trotting just enough to keep up with the leisurely pace of the white wolf pack as they strolled along.

On the mountain ridge, Lin Shuishi couldn’t withstand the intense gaze that Fuli kept directing at him. Finally, he turned around and placed the still-blind wolf pups in a fur-lined spot near the fire to keep them warm. The pups were all crying out hungrily.

A bit further away, a nursing female white wolf, who had been feeding her chubby pups, noticed the situation and came over to nurse the new arrivals before leaving.

Lin Shuishi had recently discovered something remarkable about the wolf pack. Whenever new pups were born within the pack, even if some of the other females hadn’t given birth, several wolves would naturally begin to produce milk. This allowed them to take turns hunting without disrupting the feeding of the pups.

At that moment, he watched as Fuli tore into some raw meat. The man’s sharp teeth worked with such intensity that they gleamed coldly between the red flesh. Seeing his partner’s gaze fixed on him, Fuli reached out and offered a piece of fresh, blood-free deer leg.

Lin Shuishi didn’t refuse. He took a bite; the fresh meat, though raw, wasn’t unpleasant. In fact, it tasted slightly sweet, somewhat like sashimi without soy sauce!

However, it wasn’t his favorite, so he reached into the oven’s compartment and pulled out a strip of dried meat, chewing it to savor the flavor.

This stove had originally belonged to the Lin family. Made of iron, it was sturdy and designed with two compartments separated by an iron grid. The lower part was for ash and ventilation, while the upper part was for burning wood. Lin Shuishi had also enlisted Uncle Zheng’s help to add two square iron boxes to the sides of the stove to use as a dehydrator and oven.

Because it was so handy, Lin Shuishi had dried a lot of meat strips, preserving them with salt so they could last a long time. He would also occasionally reward the young wolves with them to help with their teething.

As he pondered using the stove to bake some bread one day, he noticed the wolf king leap onto the mountain ridge, having brought back the “main party.”

Lin Shuishi wasn’t privy to the details of the negotiation that followed. However, he noticed that Fuli and the wolf king seemed increasingly agitated during their conversation. He wasn’t sure if the language barrier was the issue with the mother wolf, or if it was the wolf pack’s natural aversion to outsiders. Deciding to err on the side of caution, Lin Shuishi gathered the pups up again and held them close to his chest.

As the discussion continued, the atmosphere grew tenser. Finally, Fuli stopped speaking, his face dark as he gazed down at the vibrant, living landscape of Dongshan.

Lin Shuishi approached him, gently rubbing against him and asked, “What’s wrong? Is the pack not accepting her?”

Fuli shook his head. “No, it’s the news.”

After a moment, Fuli’s expression turned fierce, the intricate beast markings on his neck becoming visible.

“Someone is burning the mountain, exterminating wolves!”
