Ch 61: Daily Farm Life After Returning from Interstellar

Brain Flower

Su Mu leaned against her father’s shoulder and smiled, “Dad, both you and Mom will bless me, right?”

Father Su couldn’t quite describe the feeling in his heart. The cabbage he had worked so hard to grow was actually nibbled by a pig right under his nose! He had been present for most of their interactions since the day they met. When did this happen?

He glanced at his wife and asked, “Did you figure it out earlier?”

Mother Su nodded openly, “Your girl liked him first, so in the future, don’t be too strict with her about her choices.”

It’s said that daughters are treasures in the hands of every father, and that applied to him as well. He had seen how well Mu Mu treated this boy. Which girl in the village was as lucky as Mu Mu? Other kids were made to help with household chores when they grew up, whether it was washing dishes, cooking, or working in the fields. But not Mu Mu. She had been nurtured in their hands. While she hadn’t been hands-on with household chores before graduating, she eventually learned to take care of herself and even developed excellent cooking skills.

Back when their daughter first returned home, his wife hadn’t slept well for several days. She was worried that their daughter might have been mistreated outside, which was why she had chosen to come back home.

Now, someone had appeared, and Mu Mu would become part of another family in the future. Thinking of this, his wife was feeling uncomfortable, especially because she had so much influence over their daughter.

She was afraid that he might be too harsh on the boy, which could end up hurting their daughter’s feelings. After all, their daughter’s feelings for Gu Shi were clear to her.

Father Su remained silent for a while before he sighed and gently patted his daughter’s head. The girl who used to be so delicate had all grown up. It was time for her to fall in love.

After spending so much time with the boy, he had a bit of an understanding of him. He was a bit reserved but decisive and straightforward in his actions. He was also respectful and filial, the kind of person who was worth entrusting a lifetime to.

He was just worried that the threshold of the Gu family might be too high. The future was not only about these two kids but also about the intertwining of two families.

“Your dad will definitely bless you. I believe in your judgment.” He finally gave in. Just now, the attitude of Old Man Gu and his wife seemed quite normal. Perhaps they didn’t care about these differences at all. So, why worry too much?

Upon hearing this, Su Mu felt relieved and then nervously looked at her mother.

Her mother extended her finger and gently tapped her head. “Blessings. If you’re happy, your dad and I are happy. Don’t overthink things, just enjoy.”

Su Mu held both of their hands and smiled.

From this point on, their relationship had been laid out before their elders, becoming increasingly natural and intimate in their presence.

The next day, Su Mu drove with Gu Shi to the county to pick up her aunt and cousin. Jiang Yao had just finished her junior high school exams. She insisted on coming with her grandmother to congratulate her sister on moving into the new house. Although she didn’t understand why her sister had moved out to live on her own, living in a new house was a happy occasion, and she definitely wanted to be part of the excitement.

When Su Mu and Gu Shi arrived at the station, her aunt and cousin hadn’t arrived yet. Since they didn’t want to stray too far, they sat near the station entrance and waited.

“Did you not sleep well last night?” Su Mu looked at the dark circles under Gu Shi’s eyes and felt a bit sorry for him.

Gu Shi played with her hand and replied with a touch of grievance, “Yes, I’m afraid Uncle Su will come looking for me to settle the score.”

There’s no son-in-law-to-be who isn’t nervous about his future father-in-law. He was no exception. Especially since Uncle Su had treated him so well before, and now he had taken his daughter away.

Su Mu chuckled, “You’re afraid of that?” She had seen him in action during work, wearing rimmed glasses. He seemed to be orchestrating everything, strong and confident, and it had enchanted her. Of course, his cute act now was also quite adorable.

“Of course, I’m afraid, because I care about you.” Gu Shi almost made Su Mu lose her composure. She held his cheeks and looked into his eyes, asking, “Mr. Gu, you’re getting better at sweet talk. Come clean, where did you learn this from?”

“To be honest, I’m self-taught.” Gu Shi suddenly leaned in close, their faces just a few centimeters apart.

Their eyes locked, and the air seemed to thicken with a sticky sweetness.

At that moment, a clear voice came from nearby. “Sister?”

Su Mu pushed Gu Shi away, looking guilty as she turned her gaze to her aunt and cousin approaching with grace.

Standing up and waving, she called out, “Hey, I’m here.”

Gu Shi also stood up, following behind Su Mu as they went forward to greet them.

Su Mu took the things from her aunt’s hands, scolding, “sister, you’ve just arrived, and you brought so much stuff.”

Li Qiaolan smiled, “But they’re all good things.”

Jiang Yao curiously looked at Gu Shi and quietly asked Su Mu, “Aunt, is he your boyfriend?”

Su Mu smiled and nodded, introducing her boyfriend to her aunt, “Aunt, this is Gu Shi, my boyfriend.”

Li Qiaolan sized up Gu Shi and smiled, “Young man, you’re quite talented. Mu Mu, you’ve got good taste.”

Gu Shi politely responded, “Thank you, Aunt.”

He helped carry things to the car, went to buy water, and showed concern about the journey. Li Qiaolan nodded even more approvingly.

Now that they had picked them up, Su Mu didn’t linger in the county. She drove directly back home.

Mother Su had been waiting at home for a while. The sisters’ reunion was filled with joy.

Jiang Yao couldn’t get a word in edgewise, so she could only follow behind Su Mu. She was eager to be part of everything.

“Yao Yao, there are some lychees in the fridge. Do you want to eat them?”

Jiang Yao remembered the vegetables and fruits her aunt had sent her earlier. She swallowed her saliva, nodding eagerly like a chick pecking at grain, “I want to eat.”

“Then go get them yourself, I’m busy right now.” The pig head bone from yesterday still needed to be simmered; otherwise, it would spoil.

She first sautéed the marinated bones along with soybeans. After they were fragrant, she added cold water to simmer the mixture.

After finishing these tasks, during a break, Su Mu started dealing with the pig brain.

The pig brain needed to have its membranes removed to avoid any unpleasant flavors. It wasn’t difficult to remove them—she used a toothpick to lift the blood membranes and carefully peeled them away with her hands. Once all the membranes were removed, the brain’s texture wouldn’t appear as scary.

Su Mu cleaned the brain, placed it in a small bowl, added some slices of ginger, a few red dates, and wolfberries, seasoned it with salt, and finally poured in white wine until the ingredients were submerged. She wiped the inside and outside of the bowl with a clean tissue.

By this time, the bone soup was boiling. She put on heat-resistant gloves, placed the small bowl into the boiling soup, and due to the support of the bones, the bowl didn’t get submerged but instead rested steadily above them.

She covered it with a lid, and the steam inside would steam-cook the brain.

This dish was something her grandfather used to make frequently when she was a child. She had watched him prepare it countless times, so her movements were quite skilled.

As soon as Gu Shi came back, his father called him away. Su Mu wasn’t too worried, but she was curious about what the two of them were up to.

However, she would never know the answer. No matter how much she pestered Gu Shi, he never told her. Over time, she stopped asking altogether.

During lunch, the small bowl of pig brain became the focus of attention.

Su Mu divided it into three portions for her parents and her aunt to enjoy.

To outsiders, pig brain might seem scary and unappealing, but it’s rich in nutrients like calcium, phosphorus, and iron. It benefits the kidney and bone marrow, replenishes deficiency, nourishes the kidneys and brain, making it suitable for people with deficiency of qi and blood.

Gu Shi also stayed for lunch today, and his favorite was still the sautéed vegetables, rarely touching meat.

Su Mu took note of this and wondered if she should consider raising a few piglets. By feeding them spiritually enriched vegetable leaves, their meat would become even more tender. Since he enjoyed the home-raised chickens and ducks, he might also like home-raised pork.
