Summary

At 37, Lin Wu’s life is as rigid and dull as his personality.

Until one day, he receives a message from an unknown number:
“Yueyang Road Hengxing Internet CafĂ©. Help me reserve two computers. I’ll be there at 10:30!”

He digs up an old news report from twenty years ago:
On September 5, 2004, at 11:25 PM, a catastrophic fire broke out at Hengxing Internet Café on Yueyang Road. Twenty-two people died, and thirty-nine were severely burned


Lin Wu remembers it so clearly because, at the time, he was a senior in high school just two streets away. After the incident, his school held fire safety lectures for an entire month.
